Is your club matchday ready? The importance of first aid preparedness
As clubs prepare for the new season, much of the focus will be on recruitment, pitches and fixtures. But there's another essential question every club should be asking: if an injury happens this weekend, are we properly prepared?
Player welfare is at the heart of the RFU's RugbySafe programme, which sets out best practice for creating a safe playing environment. Alongside trained first aiders and emergency action plans, having the right medical equipment available, both pitch-side and in the clubhouse, is a vital part of those standards.
Many clubs start the season with first aid kits that haven't been checked since the previous campaign. Missing items, out-of-date sterile products and dwindling supplies of medical tape can all leave volunteers under pressure when they need equipment most.
The RFU recommends that clubs regularly inspect and replenish their first aid kits, ensuring they contain essential items such as sterile dressings, gloves, scissors, eyewash, emergency blankets, resuscitation aids and adhesive tapes. Medical tape is another matchday essential, with zinc oxide tape, elastic adhesive bandages and strapping products used extensively to support players throughout the season.
With participation continuing to grow across the men's, women's, girls' and junior game, many clubs now need multiple first aid kits to provide adequate cover across several pitches and age groups. Regularly reviewing both equipment and volunteer training can help ensure clubs are ready to respond when injuries occur.
Taking player welfare seriously sends a strong message to members, parents and visitors that safety is a priority.
As the new season gets underway, now is the ideal time to check your first aid provision, restock essential supplies and make sure your club is fully prepared for the season ahead.
